If there is any doubt that architecture is as much art as science, one need only look at the blue prints of a large building. Some of these renderings are so detailed and ornate copies of them end up hanging on wall like prints. The “artists” behind those prints are the architectural drafter.
Drafters are the middlemen between an architect and the construction foreman. They must interpret an architect’s designs and create the game plan—aka the blueprints—a foreman can pick up and start building with. This is not as simple as it sounds. To do a proper blue print, the drafter has to juggle hundreds of variables in drafting these documents.
A high school graduate wanting to pursue this occupation should have not only a strong artistic bend, but also a proclivity for extreme precision. Instead of canvas and paint brush, a draftsman must feel comfortable working with a drawing board, mechanical pencils, curve and t-square. They should also be familiar with graphic computer packages, particularly CAD programs. A strong understanding of math, particularly geometry, is also needed for drawing subjects in precise scale.
Believe it or not, many draftsmen start as construction workers. In certain ways this gives them an edge as they comprehend what it takes when it comes to everything from the right kind of cement to the importance of laying a solid building foundation. Those who don’t like to get their hands dirty though can apply to many a vocational or online school to earn an Associates degree or vocational certificate in the field. .
Continued education can be at either an on campus or at an online college, although many who work blue collar jobs during the day prefer the latter. This way they can hold down their jobs and then schedule their courses around work. After obtaining a minimum vocational certificate or Associates degree, it’s time to find employment, generally as an apprentice. Again, online education plays here as the apprentice goes home and studies what’s needed to advance up the career ladder. While it’s not necessary, there are many drafters who have Bachelors degrees.
Even though the construction industry has taken its hits over the last several years thanks to current economic conditions, it doesn’t seem to be affecting draftsmen quite as hard. Part of this is due to initiatives by the current administration to upgrade the national infrastructure. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates growth to be about 9%, which is near national average.
Compensation in the field is highly dependent on where one lives, but the average apprentice usually starts about $34,000 a year with benefits. The mean salary for an experienced architectural draftsman is in the mid-40s, while senior ones can make over $50,000.
The ultimate satisfaction for an architectural draftsman is being the conduit from an architect’s dream to a final realized structure. When the job is done and the building is opened, it must always be remembered that it was the draftsman contribution towards making it a reality.
